Hello to all concerned. I am greatly pleased that you are reading this posting, because (1) it shows me that others have a need or a want to express the communication problems that they are experiencing, and (2) it will help me with the assignment for my interpersonal communication course, for which I have elected to be on a panel researching communication problems and solutions with the elderly. The reason I selected this panel is very personal, for I take care of my 84 yr. old grandma. I am 29yrs. old, married with two children and have been taking care of her for the past five years. My grandma raised me from a baby, so I feel that I can view the aspect from a granddaughters point of view as well as a daughter like point of view. Grammy was very supportive of me, and fought very hard to provide me with security, stability, and as a result of this: sanity! She WAS (<---I stress this point) a very strong, independent women, who voiced her opinions without any qualms, whatsoever! Now, the only thing that she seems to grapple with is just figuring out what she wants for breakfast. As a result of this change in personality, communication problems do arise. We both struggle with issues of independence and dependence, strengths and weaknesses, opinions and advice. Sometimes I look to grandma to provide that same strength giving, all knowing advice that she used to be so capable of. I suppose this is the real reason for joining this particular panel: so that I can learn to recognize our communication problems by comparison, and work through these problems by relating comparitive solutions. Essentialy what I am asking is to provide examples of communication problems that have been experienced, and the solutions to these problems to help maintain your relationships. All information would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
Teri Meadows
