RE: Question: Need Help in Nutrition - I Didn't Realize How MuchOf a Change It Would Be - My Mom's 88

It is wonderful to see family caregivers helping and supporting each other -
I wanted to add a few comments to the question about need help in nutrition.

I agree that Ensure (you can find this at most drugstores) is a wonderful
supplement for people who are not eating well, however I would check with
her doctor to see at what rate she should have these. I would be careful
about adding the eggs due to concerns about salmonella and other bacteria
(someone in a weakened state is more vulnerable to these). You may try to
get a dietary consult for your mother, there are many products available for
those who have swallowing difficulties and poor appetites. Check with her
physician or local hospital for a list of practicing dieticians.

In terms of the sleeping concerns - as we age our deep sleep periods
diminish and we have a lighter sleep pattern. Without wanting to appear too
cautious, you will want to talk with her physician about any sleep
medication (even natural), as there can be contraindications with other
medicines and for those who may suffer from dementia or alzheimer's can have
agitating effects.
