Dear Sue:
I am not sure if I understand your message-is your aunt in an assisted
living facility? Some states have a Waiver Program which will pay for
assisted living. A Waiver is a special agrrement made between a state and
the federal Health Care Financing Admistration (HCFA). However in most
states, Medicaid eligibilty is available for NURSING CARE level of care
only.
If your aunt is in assisted living and New York has an agreement with HCFA
to reimburse for assisted living services, your aunt MUST meet the MEANS
TEST -in other words, her total assets must fall below a certain amount. In
Pennsylvania, this amount is $2,500. Assets include savings, stocks and
sometimes a home if she has not occupied for a certain period of time and
there is no chance that she will be able to return to her home. If your aunt
is living at home, there may be other programs available (A Social Security
Supplement).
Call the ElderCare Locator at 800 677-1116 , Monday -Friday 9:00 AM -8:00
PM. Ask them to direct you to the County (where your aunt currently resides)
Area Office on Aging.
