Fixation in Elderly Adults

My elderly mother fixates on a topic and cannot let go - this may go on for days or weeks at a time. Sometimes there is a request that must be filled immediatedly or there is a problem that has already been solved but we cannot talk rationally about it. Does anyone have any ideas on what is happening - and how to break into the fixation?
