Dear Reader, In our present age, people are living longer. Doctors and better nutrition knowledge have helped make this happen. On the other side of the coin, more and more people are joining the work force, and as a result of this, there aren't enough caretakers at home to fill the needs of older people who can't live alone. Nor are there enough nurse's aides to help tend the people in a nursing home. How are we going to attract more of these caring people? To enter this field you have to be of a certain nature and personality. You don't have to have all the education of a nurse, but you do need a certain amount. Specialized classes are needed to help train them so that they can fulfill their duties in the most productive manner. After my knee replacement surgery I went from the hospital to a nursing home. I found that many of the aides were trying to support a family on what they earned, and their salaries don't cover any extras. They loved what they were doing, but are they going to "burn out" from the stress? I had a one hundred and one year old woman for a roommate who needed assistance because she couldn't remember very well. I was impressed with how kind and patient the aides were with her. So much more than I could ever be! It made me realize how necessary these aides are. Grandma |
