Dear Reader, Did you see the AP newspaper article on how people worry about losing good health and independence as they grow old? This poll, released by the Americans Discuss Social Security project, found that people under the age fifty tend to be pessimistic compared with the actual experiences of elderly people, and expect to rely less on Social Security than current retirees. Unretired Americans seem to over-estimate the likelihood of encountering problems as they age, since only a small fraction of people over eighty say these bad things have actually happened to them. As I have aged, I have noticed that younger people have become more concerned and pessimistic about current events. Is it because there are many more people now, or is it because conditions are more complicated? It seems to me that the young are not having carefree days as we did. Naturally there have always been some problems, and there always will be, but we seemed to have more time to "smell the roses". Life IS at a faster pace these days, so that makes it even more necessary to stop, catch your breath, refresh yourself, and then go on, making each day count. Remember, in spite of glitches, life is wonderful. Grandma |
