What Did You Say?

Dear Reader,

How many times a day do you say "what"? Are you turning up your TV because the people aren't speaking clearly? Have you ever considered that you have a hearing loss?

I asked myself these questions and ended up getting a hearing aid. Now, I am a true believer and constantly bless whoever invented it. I spoke with a friend who has an aid, asked him how he liked it, and where did he go for the purchase. I am sure there are any number of good places, but do inquire about returning it within thirty days in case you determine that you can't possibly get used to it.

Mostly there are only pluses, but there are a few minor disadvantages that I had to get used to. I can never spot that cardinal who is singing his beautiful song - I can hear him, but from what direction? Then there is the problem with the telephone. If you instinctively answer with the receiver touching your hearing aid, you will get a loud whistle. Riding your bike in the wind will give you this whistling, as well. Crowds will bother other people. I simply stand closer to the person I'm speaking with and concentrate on his voice to tune out the others.

There is another problem some people refer to: they keep changing the volume
up or down. I solved that by finding the spot that suits me best for normal conditions. I turn my hearing aid off at night, and then the next morning I set it back to the memorized place.

There is something else to be aware of. There may be a wax build-up when you wear a hearing aid. The first time this happened to me I didn't realize I wasn't hearing very well. The next real sign was when I leaned over I heard a loud sound in that ear. You can imagine how startled I was! Here again, I found a simple solution. Every time you're in your doctor's office have him check for wax. Also, my dealer has me come every six months to check and clean my hearing aid. At this time he also checks my ear. See how easy it is to overcome problems?

When you make your purchase, you will receive a book of instructions. Be sure to read it completely.

Being able to get glasses, hearing aids, and medical care helps to make these years golden.
