Aerobic Exercise Boosts Mental Abilities in Elderly

Our ability to process information usually begins to decline in our mid-50s, with a noticeable drop occurring by age 65. Researchers are finding, though, that walking can improve at least two cognitive processes - organization skills and auditory processing - as we age. Age-related decreases in cognitive functioning are most likely to occur in tasks that require a lot of cognitive energy or attention. Research supports the theory that cognitive tasks that demand more attention and enery are more sensitive to the beneficial effects of exercise.
