Hiring Independent Caregivers

Families often choose to use caregivers that are not employees of a home health care agency.  This option can be less expensive and can give you more control over who provides the care.  There are several things you want to consider when hiring an independent caregiver:
  • Check if they licensed.
  • Check if they carry their own liability insurance.
  • Find out if the have a federal tax id number (i.e., make sure you don't have to withhold taxes from their pay).
  • Find out what happens if the caregiver gets sick or needs vacation.  Does the caregiver find a replacement or is it the families' responsibility?
  • Check references and conduct a criminal background check (include drivers license if they are going to transport).
  • Ask if they are willing to be trained on unfamiliar procedures and equipment.

The relationship between a senior and their caregiver can be a wonderful experience for all involved. Seniors may share aspects of their life that they do not want to "burden" their family with. The additional time you put in to the hiring process will pay off in the future.

You may want to check with other agencies and caremanagers to see if they know any independent caregivers that might be available in your area.
